friendly persuasion

Friendly Persuasion is a movie about a Civil war from 1956....There is one Quaker* family which at first has nothing related with the war or other viloence. However, at last the son and his father are involve in the war because of they need to do the right thing for the family and need to protect others.
( quaker is a club related to society of friend in England which is group that oppose violence and has no religious leaders or ceremonies, and hold its religious meetings in silence)
Jess Birdwell is the man of the house. He is a funny guy who wants to win the horse race with his friend every morning on the way to Quaker’s meeting. However, he also respects his wife and listens to her. Jess is showing a man representing a family guy he will do everything about his family and there are also a contradiction of being a Quaker in himself. Once his son wants to go to the war he didn’t stop him but let him go because he thinks that it’s the right duty that the man should do.
Eliza is the president in the quaker meeting, she doesn’t want anything related to violence doing with her family. Even though she likes to dance but she doesn’t want to show the steps in front of he children because she thinks that it’s not polite for a women to dance. She is a deeply religious woman and against any violence even, Jess buy a piano she makes him choose between her and piano but at the end jess can keeps the piano in the house because of compromising.
Josh is the oldest son who still has a conflict in this mind between violence and peace. He loves peace but also wanted to be in a military because he wants to help and protect others and his family.
Maddie is only one daughter who wants to remain Quaker like her mom but on the other hand she also wants to have fun like others non-Quakers. Maddie also fell in love with Sam who is in a military and always write a letter for her. Eliza doesn’t like Sam because Sam is in a military and has something related with a violence and war.
Little Jess is a youngest son of the house. He always fighting with a goose which Eliza called it a pet. Little jess always hit and throw something to the goose because it’s always bit him. Little jess doesn’t want to remind Quaker because he is a boy who likes to fight.
My opinion : I love the movie that has both comedy plus drama feelings, I enjoyed watching it because it’s not serious as I thought it would be. I learned about quaker and such a family and also the rebs plus the civil war, the way they come and rob the houses. It is a good movie in term of watching the way how civil war used to be. The story line also fun and interesting, it is the first movie about the war that I watched at the beginning until the end and don’t get bored :) Thanks you Acharn!

Good on you! This is a good slice of life look at what it was like in some of the Northern states during the war. The Quakers are very much part of the American tradition. These people are none violent and go out of their way to to do violent acts to other people.
Your comments about the comedy part made me remember the goose chancing the kid. Very funny.
I think you got a lot out of this movie and now you know what a Quaker is.
The Civil War was fought between Americans. When confronted by gentle folks who are obviously good people, the invading raiders acted as they were - American and gentlemen. War is awful. War is hell. If one can keep one's humanity during a war, then that person can remain human forever.
Good comments.

i only could think of the drawbacks of the civil war , like family torn apart , leaving the wife alone , killing killing and killing endlessly

yes i know, i also don't like civil war. It made people do cruel and have to choose between duty and family. Nothing is good about it at all.
